Mega Dairy Heifer 18

Feeding your dairy cows will depend on the needs of your farming operation and production goals.

When feeding young calves, an early start is key to ensuring a lifetime of optimal performance and maximised profits. It is important to note that a calf’s feed conversion efficiency drastically decreases from birth to maturity. The most economical time to feed a calf is therefore as early as possible after birth up until 24 months. Calves’ diets should be formulated to supply the complete range of energy, protein, and trace minerals to support the development of a healthy rumen, a large frame and ultimately a successful dairy cow.

Growing out heifers on a high-quality, balanced diet will ensure future success in your herd. It is important to note that there are different periods and diets for feeding heifers; from 8 months to freshening, as well as during the freshing phase. Freshening occurs as soon as milk production begins. To formulate these rations, it is best to contact an Epol technical advisor for expert on-farm advice. It is, however, advisable that farmers refrain from feeding dry cow products to freshen first calf heifers.

A dry cow is a dairy cow that is in a stage of its lactation cycle where milk production ceases prior to calving. This part of the lactation cycle is referred to as the cow’s dry period and typically lasts between 40 – 64 days. Consult your Epol technical advisor during this period to make sure your cows’ needs are met.

Lactating dairy cows graze on either a pasture diet or a Total Mixed Ration. For both of these diets, Epol can supply products which are scientifically formulated and supply the correct concentrates for their needs.
