Epol’s Sure Lay Layer range is specially formulated to support the productivity, health, and egg-laying performance of commercial layer hens in South Africa. With targeted nutrition for every stage of the laying cycle, the Sure Lay range helps poultry farmers maximise feed efficiency, maintain consistent egg quality, and support the long-term wellness of their flock.

Before introducing pullets into the layer house, ensure the environment is properly prepared. Temperature control, clean water, correct lighting and optimal stocking density all contribute to strong early performance. Ensure immediate access to fresh feed and water as this helps reduce stress and encourages intakes.

When selecting the correct layer feed, make sure you match each growth phase with the most appropriate Sure Lay Phase Layer product. The range includes:

  • Sure Lay Phase 1 – Designed for early-lay hens (<40 weeks), supporting peak egg production, shell strength and optimal intake.
  • Sure Lay Phase 2 – Formulated for mid-lay (40 – 60 weeks) hens to maintain egg size, shell quality and consistent production.
  • Sure Lay Phase 3 – Ideal for late-lay (>60 weeks) birds, helping sustain egg quality and manage energy intake as hens age.

Make sure heating, lighting and ventilation systems are fully functional and positioned so that feed and water are not placed directly under heat sources, which can reduce consumption.

Regularly monitor bird behaviour — active hens should be eating, drinking and moving around freely. If hens appear sluggish, assess environmental conditions such as floor temperature or ventilation. Provide adequate drinker and feeder space: one bell drinker per 100 birds or one nipple drinker per 8 – 10 birds, and the correct number of pan or tube feeders to avoid competition.

Temperature management is critical for successful layer rearing and production. Record minimum and maximum temperatures daily and ensure the correct floor temperature during crucial early weeks. Optimising these conditions helps birds settle into lay, supporting better long-term performance.

Hens should always have continuous access to Epol’s Sure Lay feed, with intake guided by recommended feeding guidelines. Download our Sure Lay brochure for complete feeding specifications and phase recommendations.
